A friend out in Michigan, Emil Teegarden, who has already beaten the biblical numbers and is still going strong, found the text of Housman's poem, "Loveliest of Trees" and sent it along, to go with Jamie's photographs of the cherry blossoms encircling Washington DC's Tidal Basin, where she got these pictures on a trip down Connecticut Avenue on Sunday April 4, 2004, when predicted, approaching high winds and rain threatened the flowering trees, just reaching their peak the week before Easter. Loveliest of Trees

Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.

Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.

And since to look at things in bloom
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow.
